Book Review: "Beetles, Lightly Toasted" By Phyllis Reynolds naylor

Updated: Dec 30, 2021

ABOUT + INSIGHT

Beetles, Lightly Toasted is a hilarious & creative story by award-winning author, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Every year there’s a Roger B. Sundermann contest with the prize of $50 and your picture in the local newspaper. All you have to do is to write an essay according to the topic. Fifth-grader Andy Moller aims to win this year. However, this year’s topic is a total flunk: “Conservation.” His cousin, Jack, also aims to win it too. Will he still have the chance to win regardless of his cousin’s creative mind?

Very hilarious for me, really enjoyed that I wish it wasn't that short. I also love how the plot kind of twists at the ending. All in all, it was very fun & creative, a great family read!

AGE-APPROPRIATE

9 & up, grades 4-7.

PRAISE

"...And the final scene where the three boys share Andy's concoctions is not only hilarious but also one of those moments of truth where old antagonists see each other with new appreciation. This should be popular."
