ABOUT + INSIGHT
Have you ever wondered about life during the peak of the Marcos Era or even the life of a "Martial Law Baby" (a baby born around the '70s)? If so, then this book is for you! Salingkit is an amazing diary novel by Cyan Abad-Jugo. It is based on a schoolgirl's life during the People Power Revolution wherein "Goro" (the code name of the main character, Kitty G. Eugenio) has to handle trials from her family, friends, school, politics, and music. But the year of the tiger certainly promises change not only in her life but in others too. Salingkit is a novel I would recommend for teenagers, especially girls because they can be able to relate themselves to the characters in the book. If you are an 80s-90s music fan, I would highly recommend this book to you. Once I read it, I was so surprised to read lots of song titles and lyrics that I didn't recognize. I hardly expected music... the music volume of Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, a-ha, and other 80s-90s bands was kind of high (joke). But I have to admit, music in a book makes the book very interesting. Salingkit is definitely for all readers, preferably from high school and up. You probably may not like or be familiar with the "diary" type of novel but you can still read this book because the author has perfectly balanced the story and the diary. I congratulate Ms. Jugo for that! With her written words, she has forced me to read the novel four times! Even when I normally read a book only one time. So if you're looking forward to reading this book, I would like to tell you a few things. First, there are some Tagalog words and second, there are some fun facts from the author about the Marcos Era and the 80's - 90's music. If you would ask me to rate this book, from 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, I will rate this 10 because this can definitely be a bestseller.

PRAISE
"Salingkit is a fine coming-of-age YA novel. It is actually a 1986 diary of Kitty or, Goro, to her friends, and her story during the year of People Power.
I like Salingkit for it has a good storyline. Despite the fact that it reads like a typical YA novel, I can't deny that this book sparks interest and affects me somehow on emotion department."

BOOK EXCERPT You may probably want an excerpt of the book, if so, here it is! "Chapter 1 | January 1986 | ...different creeds... | 1 Jan 1986 Wednesday Hello Diary, my name is Goro. Actually, it's Kitty. But I am part of the New Wavers Club now, the NWC. We've all decided to use our code names beginning this year. It's our New Year's resolution. My best friend, Cielo, wants to be called Taylor. Ysabel wants to be called Orzabal, and Annie wants to be called Mrs. Curt Smith. She's funny. She says there are just too many Smiths in the world, and besides, people might think she likes the Smiths instead of Curt Smith. Our code names are supposed to be secret. I plan to write down all our secrets here. This diary was Kuya Alan's gift; I wish he'd given me something more grown-up, but oh well. This will do. He should also know that just because my name is Kitty doesn't mean I love Hello Kitty. Or cats. Anyway, my name and my diary aren't the only new things around here. I also have a new room, in a new house. I have to live with Kuya Alan, and his dad and mom, my Tito Simon and Tita Leanna. Mama is going to the States. I wish she'd change her mind. "
