Book Review: "Elisabeth Elliot: Joyful Surrender" by Janet and Geoff Benge

Updated: Dec 28, 2021

ABOUT + INSIGHT:

Elisabeth Elliot: Joyful Surrender by Janet and Geoff Benge is another adventure-packed biography filled with fun and suspense. This book describes Elisabeth Elliot's life from her childhood to her old age. She was raised in an orderly Christian home among four siblings and loving Godly parents. The Howard (her maiden name) family was very adventurous, and as they boarded fellow missionaries (who told them stories after stories of their trips) Elisabeth "Betty" Elliot couldn't help thinking that one day she'd be prepared to face the same hardships as they had. After graduating in Hampden DuBose Academy and Wheaton College, she was called to serve God in South America and eventually get married to college sweetheart, Jim Elliot. Turns out it's not easy, she had to tediously study the Quicha language, settle in with the rough society, and face storms. Yet despite all this, Betty carried on. She was even able to share the gospel to the same Aucas who killed her newlywed husband! I highly recommend this book as it heart-warmingly portrays how Elisabeth "Betty" Elliot's life can be used by God as a blessing to others. Indeed, I am blessed and especially touched on how Betty continues to carry out the mission to share Christ regardless of her husband's death. She even used it as her way of sharing Christ to others!

"Full disclosure: I didn't know who Elisabeth "Betty" Elliot was before reading this book. I picked it up on a whim because I needed a book by or about a missionary for a reading list. After finishing it, all I can say is Wow! What an incredible life! P.S. Have tissues handy when reading. You've been warned."
